There are 100 centavos in one peso. The current denominations are as follows:

Unlike some of the beach resorts in Mexico, it is not usual for businesses
in San Miguel de Allende to accept dollars instead of pesos, with the exception of hotels
and some of the larger shops. However, you will find that using your regular ATM card will
give you the "bank rate" of exchange, and even with your bank's transaction fee
you will probably get a better rate of exchange than you can on the "street".
There are a fair number of money exchange houses, "Casas de Cambio",
but they close very early on Saturdays and all but one are closed on Sundays.
Travelers' checks, unfortunately, while being safe, are not the most
practical as using them entails a long wait in a bank to exchange them. Many have
found that bringing bank debit cards much more practical. It is also
worth noting that American Express card holders can exchange cash
personal US bank account checks for local currency at any American
Express travel services office, up to US $2000 every 21 days. In San
Miguel de Allende, an American Express Travel Services branch is located
at Hidalgo #1-A.
